A “baseball glove” that protects the body from ovarian and pancreatic cancer

Amato Giaccia is the leader of this important study. He and his team are trying to find practical solutions to treat ovarian and pancreatic cancer. These two diseases have many similar features. That is why Giaccia decided to carry out a study focusing on both oncological diseases. Here’s what they have in common:

• Both cancers are difficult to detect in the early stages. In addition, they tend to advance very quickly.
• Tumors appear on the ovaries and pancreas. When they are discovered, the affected parts of the organs are removed by surgery.
• After surgery, patients undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
• Treatments are generally very aggressive. The patient is very weak and the risk of the disease recurring is not eliminated.

The molecule that kills cancer cells

• The method used is to stop the functioning of tyrosine kinase receptors, an essential element for the survival and development of tumorigenic cells.
• This molecule, called the “baseball glove,” can completely inoculate the patient, especially if the treatment is accompanied by chemotherapy.

Therefore, the molecule destroys the tumors and the disease regresses. 

Expectations for the future of the new molecule to treat cancer

The study is still at an experimental level. So far, the tests have only been performed on animals. We are still waiting for the transition to clinical trials. As we already know, there are many patients with ovarian or pancreatic cancer who are hoping for a cure for the disease that grinds them.

Currently, the molecule is called MYD1-72. Scientists hope this could provide the following benefits:

• It can be proposed as a complementary therapy, less aggressive. The kidneys and immune system will no longer be as affected by anticancer treatments.
• In sick animals at a less advanced stage, the success rate is 95%. 
• In the case of advanced or metastatic cancer, the success rate is 51%. However, in severe cases, doctors may opt for a combination of this molecule and chemotherapy to reduce the negative effects of the disease.

Clinical trials will be conducted in the near future, and hopes are high for results. Scientists predict that molecules or “baseball gloves” may be developed to treat other cancers.
